Chapter 23
A light rain fell. Erik lay within his small tent, peering up at the sloped roof, listening to the clutter of droplets. Sleep had escaped him for the last few hours despite his best efforts, and for once it had nothing to do with the voices in his head. The fault lay only with himself and his overactive brain. Plans unspooled into twisting loops in his mind, branching off and ending abruptly. Too many possibilities lay open to choose anyone for long.
Do you dream? Asbjörn asked. All of mine are nightmares, filled with uprooted trees and ash-strewn horizons. What do you think it means?
Erik fought back the sigh he wanted to release. He missed the days when Patrick and the dragon had been the only voices in his head and felt stupid for doing so. The past could not be changed, so it was pointless to always be gazing back and wondering what if.
Are the dead supposed to dream? Asbjörn asked, his voice wondering. Not even death holds any release for such as us. We are damned, chained to the Pit.
Saxi snorted. Enough of your endless chattering, human. The only one who is damned is you. The rest of us long simply for the peace of your silence.
Patrick remained quiet, and Erik found himself mimicking the jokes the Lightbender would have said if he were still speaking to him. The jokes were only half as funny and almost completely ignored by the denizens of his head, except for the Celestial Dragon which loosed a throaty growl. A sound pregnant with the constant hunger that plagued the beast.
Erik ran his hand over his face and turned onto his side. It was going to be a long night. He turned his focus to the thing in his gut. It churned with prana, faint light rays at the edge of his perception.
A strong gust of wind whipped the side of the tent and a high-pitched screech cut through the night. Erik bolted upright and reached for his weapons: two longswords and a shortsword. He waited for a second, concerned that he might have imagined the sound, but after a moment yells and shouts rang outside his tent.
A blue and red robe grew out of his flesh; he had fed himself his entire wardrobe before setting off from Hjörtur; it was much simpler to carry whatever he needed inside of himself than lugging it around in a chest. He fastened his swords to his yellow sash and stepped out of his tent. In the tent across from his own, Erik caught sight of Kai fumbling with his longsword through the tent flap.
The camp was in an uproar, the armored men on top of the wagons and carriages stood armed with bows, peering out into the night.
âBlack Sprites,â someone screamed as a ball of black fog with two beady, red eyes appeared in front of one of the soldiers.
The man screamed and released his arrow as he tumbled back from the wagon. His arrow passed through the demonic blob and sailed off into the night.
